Holi, the festival of colors, had always been on our bucket list. When we planned our trip to India, timing it with this vibrant celebration was a must. For us, there was something magical about experiencing Holi in one of the most culturally rich places in the world.

After doing a bit of research, we decided to head to Jaipur, the heart of Rajasthan, for our colorful adventure. Whether it was the bustling street parties, the traditional celebrations, or the energy that fills the air, Jaipur offered everything we were hoping for, and more.

If you’re planning your own Holi trip, here's a guide to make sure you experience it like we did!

What Is Holi? A Festival of Joy and Colors

Holi is more than just a fun festival; it holds deep cultural significance. Celebrated across India, Holi marks the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. This joyful occasion brings people together as they throw colorful powders at each other, dance to lively music, and share delicious sweets. It’s a celebration of renewal—of relationships, of life, and of the vibrant energy that surrounds us.

Typically held in early March, Holi falls on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Phalguna. For our trip in 2024, we made sure to attend the festival on March 25th. If you want to sync your trip with this event, don’t forget to check the lunar calendar ahead of time!

Why Jaipur? The Best Place for Holi Celebrations

While there are many places in India to experience Holi, Jaipur stood out to us for several reasons. As part of the Golden Triangle, Jaipur offers a unique blend of cultural history and vibrant celebrations. One of the highlights of our trip was attending the Dhulandi Festival at the Khasa Kothi Hotel, organized by the Rajasthan Tourism Board. This event was lively, festive, and, importantly, safe. We danced, laughed, and celebrated with locals and travelers alike, all while surrounded by the historical beauty of Jaipur.

Afterward, we continued the fun at a nearby dayclub, Sambre, where the atmosphere was even more energetic. However, the crowd there was a little more intense, and we encountered some rowdy behavior, so it was a bit different from the relaxed vibe of Khasa Kothi. Nonetheless, the day was filled with non-stop fun, and we wouldn’t have missed it for anything.

Top Holi Celebration Spots Across India

If you’re still undecided about where to celebrate Holi, here are some other fantastic places to consider:

Delhi: A city full of diverse celebrations, from traditional gatherings to wild street parties.

Mathura and Vrindavan: If you’re seeking a traditional experience, these towns are steeped in Holi legends tied to Lord Krishna.

Varanasi: For those looking for a quieter, more spiritual experience, celebrating Holi by the Ganges is an unforgettable choice.

Mumbai: Modern celebrations here bring a cosmopolitan vibe, with beach parties and vibrant street events.

Safety Tips for Holi: Celebrate Smart

While Holi is a lot of fun, it's important to stay safe while celebrating. Here’s what we learned during our first Holi experience:

Be cautious with colors: Opt for natural, organic colors to avoid skin irritation or stains. We made sure to get our powders from trusted vendors, and it made a huge difference.

Stay hydrated and protected: Most Holi parties happen outdoors, so wear sunscreen, stay hydrated, and drink plenty of water.

Keep your belongings safe: Crowded events can attract pickpockets, so use a money belt or keep your valuables secure.

Respect the local culture: Holi is deeply cultural. Be mindful of those who may not want to participate and never force color on anyone.

What to Wear for Holi: Stay Comfortable and Stylish

The best part about Holi fashion? It’s all about comfort and practicality. We chose simple, breathable white clothing because it highlights the colors and helps keep us cool in the heat. A linen top and pants worked perfectly for the day. However, avoid wearing dresses, skirts, or low-cut tops as people can get a bit wild with the colors.

Here are a few essentials to pack for your Holi celebration:

Thick sunscreen

White clothes (linen is great!)

A scarf or bandana to protect your face

Sunglasses to shield your eyes from both the colors and the sun

Comfortable, waterproof shoes

A plastic bag to store your stained clothes afterward

First-Time Holi Tips: What We Wish We Knew

After attending Holi for the first time, we definitely learned a few things:

Be ready for stains: Even if you're fully covered, the colors will find their way onto your skin. Protect your skin by applying oil and sunscreen before the celebration starts.

Coconut oil for removal: After the festival, use coconut oil and a sugar scrub to remove stubborn color stains from your skin. Trust us, it works wonders!

Prepare for hair dye: If you have light-colored hair, be prepared for it to turn a rainbow of colors. We recommend oiling your hair beforehand to minimize staining.

Watch out for rowdy behavior: While Holi is a celebration, some people can get a little too enthusiastic, especially in crowded areas like venues or dayclubs. Stay alert, keep an eye on your friends, and stay safe!
