Delhi's massive Red Fort (Lal Qila) once served as the residence of the powerful Mughal emperors for nearly two centuries, until the British took control in 1857.

But the fort is more than just a testament to Mughal opulence; it has endured countless trials, including attacks, and stands as the backdrop for some of India’s most pivotal historical moments.

Today, it remains one of the most visited landmarks in Delhi, drawing tourists from around the world.

How to Visit the Red Fort?

The Red Fort is open every day from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., except on Mondays. It’s best to set aside a few hours to explore and relax on the lawn before venturing back into the bustling city. To avoid crowds, try to visit early in the morning. If you plan to leave before closing, aim to depart by 4 p.m. to avoid the intense rush-hour traffic. Alternatively, you can take the Delhi Metro.

The Delhi Metro Heritage Line, an extension of the Violet Line, opened in May 2017, making travel to the fort more convenient. The Lal Qila Metro Station is located right next to the fort. Exit at Gate 4, and the fort will be on your left. Another option is to use the Chandni Chowk Metro Station on the Yellow Line, just a 10-minute walk away, though this route passes through a busy area.

While the fort has four gates, the main entrance is the Lahore Gate on the west side. The ticket counter is to the left of this gate, but you can skip the wait by purchasing tickets online. Ticket prices were increased in August 2018, and you’ll receive a discount for cashless payments. The current prices are $0.50 for Indians ($0.45 cashless), and $8 for foreigners ($7.50 cashless). Children under 15 years old can enter for free.

What to See?

The Red Fort, though vast, has lost some of its former grandeur over time. While many of its original buildings have endured, it may take a bit of imagination to picture how magnificent it once was. Restoration efforts are ongoing, so some areas may be inaccessible during your visit.

Entering through the Lahore Gate, you'll come across Chhatta Chowk, a long arched corridor that once housed the royal tailors and merchants. Today, it’s a bustling market area known as Meena Bazaar, where you’ll find shops selling souvenirs and handcrafted goods. Recently restored, the chowk and its shopfronts have had their ceiling artwork uncovered, giving them a more authentic 17th-century Mughal appearance. Don’t forget to haggle for the best prices!

What Else to Do Nearby?

Visit to the Red Fort is often paired with a trip to the nearby Jama Masjid, the iconic royal mosque built by Emperor Shah Jahan when he established his capital in Delhi.

If you're hungry, try Karim's, a legendary Delhi restaurant famous for its non-vegetarian dishes. Alternatively, check out Al Jawahar, right next door. For a more upscale experience, the stylish Walled City Cafe & Lounge, located in a 200-year-old mansion just south of Gate along Hauz Qazi Road, offers a chic atmosphere. If you're willing to splurge, Lakhori at Haveli Dharampura is a beautifully restored mansion in Old Delhi serving delicious food.

If you're up for the chaos, spend some time exploring Old Delhi, including Chandni Chowk, Asia’s largest spice market, and the colorful painted houses at Naughara. Food lovers should also sample the street food at these famous spots.

For a unique experience, visit the Charity Birds Hospital at the Digambar Jain Temple, located opposite the Red Fort, where you can meet some feathered friends. Another significant historical site nearby is Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib, where Emperor Aurangzeb notoriously beheaded the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, near Chandni Chowk Metro.

To make the most of your visit without feeling overwhelmed, consider joining a guided walking tour of Old Delhi. Companies like Reality Tours and Travel, Delhi Magic, Delhi Food Walks, Delhi Walks, and Masterjee ki Haveli offer excellent options for exploring the area.

With so much to explore, a guided tour can help you navigate the rich history, vibrant culture, and delicious food of Old Delhi, ensuring you don't miss a thing!
