Hey Lykkers! Taking care of our teeth is something we all know is important, but sometimes we aren't sure if we're doing it the right way. Brushing our teeth may seem like a simple task, but doing it correctly can really make a difference in our dental health.
Let's dive into the right brushing techniques and tips to ensure we're all keeping our smiles bright and healthy.
To make sure we don't miss any spots, it's helpful to follow a routine. Here's an easy-to-follow order for brushing:
• Start by brushing the lower teeth, then move on to the upper teeth.
• Brush the back teeth first, then work your way to the front teeth.
• Don't forget to clean the inner side of your teeth before the outer side.
Following this sequence consistently will ensure you don't overlook any part of your mouth and get a thorough cleaning every time.
Everyone's brushing needs might differ, but the key is to use a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head. This will help prevent gum damage and allow you to reach all areas of your teeth. Here are some specific techniques based on different needs:
Modified Bass Technique
This is a great method for people with healthy gums or those with mild gum disease. Here's how to do it:
• Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums (see the image for reference).
• For the upper teeth, point the brush upwards at a 45-degree angle (illustrated in the images).
• For the lower teeth, point the brush downwards at the same angle.
• Once positioned, use short, gentle horizontal strokes, brushing two teeth at a time, about 10 times. For the last few strokes, turn the brush towards the chewing surface.
• For the inner surfaces of the front teeth, hold the toothbrush vertically and move it up and down.
Special Care for Gum Recession
For those with gum recession or after periodontal surgery (about 2 to 4 weeks), use a toothbrush with soft bristles and gently vibrate the brush towards the chewing surface of the teeth. This method prevents further damage to the gums while still cleaning effectively.
For those with gum disease, interdental brushes can be a game-changer. When selecting one, make sure it's the right size to easily fit between your teeth. Here's how to use it:
• After wetting the brush, place it between your teeth, gently moving it back and forth about 5 times on both sides of the tooth.
• If you're cleaning the back teeth, you can either bend the brush to a 90-degree angle or purchase one that's angled, making it easier to reach those hard-to-reach areas.
For areas with limited space, like the back of the mouth, a single-tufted brush works well. This tool allows you to get in between the molars for a more thorough clean.
Dental floss is great for cleaning between the teeth, which is often where plaque can build up. Here's how to use floss correctly:
• Cut a piece of floss about the length of your forearm. Wrap the ends around your middle fingers, leaving some space between them.
• Gently slide the floss between your teeth and move it in a back-and-forth motion to get it into the gum line.
• Once it's in place, pull the floss tight against the tooth surface and scrape upward to remove any plaque.
• After cleaning one space, unwind some floss from one finger and move it to the next gap, repeating the process.
TV and Sofa Distance: For a better overall brushing experience, don't rush! Be sure to dedicate at least 2-3 minutes to brushing each time, focusing on each tooth surface.
Toothbrush and Toothpaste Choice: Pick a fluoride toothpaste that's right for your teeth and gums. Avoid using too much toothpaste, as it can create excess foam and make it harder to brush thoroughly.
After Brushing: Always remember to clean your toothbrush after use, and replace it every 3-4 months, or sooner if the bristles are worn out.
