Homemade Taco Seasoning

Homemade taco seasoning is simple to make and more affordable than store-bought versions. The base for this recipe includes chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, Mexican oregano, salt, and pepper. For added flavor and heat, paprika, coriander, onion powder, and crushed red pepper can be included. Adjust the spice levels to personal taste for the perfect seasoning blend!

How to Make Taco Meat

Ingredients:

- 1 tablespoon olive oil

- 1 pound lean ground protein

- 2 teaspoons chili powder

- 2 teaspoons cumin

- ½ teaspoon oregano

- ½ teaspoon garlic powder

- ½ teaspoon salt

- ½ teaspoon black pepper

- 2 tablespoons tomato paste

- ½ cup water

For serving the tacos:

- 8 corn or flour tortillas

- Finely chopped lettuce

- Shredded Mexican cheese blend or cheddar cheese

- Chopped tomatoes

- Chopped red onions

Instructions:

1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground meat and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

2. Stir in chili powder, cumin, dried oregano, garlic powder, salt, pepper, tomato paste, and water. Continue to cook over medium-low heat for 3-5 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.

3. Serve warm on tortillas with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, red onions, or your favorite toppings.

Notes:

Storage: Keep any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Reheat on the stovetop, adding a splash of water to prevent drying out.

Freezing Instructions: Let the taco meat cool completely before placing in freezer-safe containers or ziplock bags. It will last for up to 3 months.

Substitutes:

- You can use tomato sauce in place of tomato paste and water.

- Paprika can be substituted for chili powder.
