A Guide to Outdoor Travel in the Pyrenees

Hey Lykkers! Are you ready to discover the breathtaking beauty of the Pyrenees? This stunning mountain range offers a wealth of outdoor adventures, from hiking to skiing, all while surrounded by stunning landscapes.

Let’s dive into our journey and explore the best attractions, food, and accommodations in this spectacular region.

Hiking at Cirque de Gavarnie

Our adventure began at the Cirque de Gavarnie, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its dramatic cliffs and cascading waterfalls. As we hiked along the well-marked trails, we marveled at the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The hike to the main waterfall, which is one of the tallest in Europe, takes about 1.5 hours and is suitable for most fitness levels.

The area is open year-round, and there is no entrance fee, making it a perfect stop for outdoor enthusiasts. For those looking for a more challenging experience, numerous trails lead into the higher elevations, providing an unforgettable day of exploration.

Skiing in Saint-Lary-Soulan

Next, we ventured to Saint-Lary-Soulan, a charming ski resort offering winter sports enthusiasts a variety of slopes to enjoy. With over 100 kilometers of ski runs, there’s something for everyone, from beginners to seasoned pros. We spent our days carving through fresh powder and enjoying the stunning alpine scenery.

The ski season typically runs from December to April, with a full-day lift pass costing around €45. After a long day on the slopes, we warmed up with a hearty local meal of cassoulet, a delicious bean and special dish, for about €12.

Exploring the Vignemale

For those seeking a more adventurous experience, the Vignemale offers exhilarating hiking and climbing opportunities. Standing at 3,298 meters, it is the highest peak in the French Pyrenees. We decided to take a guided tour to ensure our safety while navigating the rugged terrain.

The guided hikes typically last a full day, with prices around €70 per person, including equipment rental. Reaching the summit provides a sense of accomplishment, as well as unparalleled views of the surrounding landscapes.

Local Cuisine: A Taste of the Pyrenees

When it comes to local food, the Pyrenees have plenty to offer. Besides cassoulet, we enjoyed poulet basquaise, a flavorful chicken dish with peppers and tomatoes, which cost around €14. The region is also famous for its sheep's cheese, which is a must-try while visiting local markets. Pairing these delightful meals with the stunning backdrop of the mountains makes dining here a memorable experience.

Accommodation: Hotel du Mont Rose

For a cozy stay in the heart of the Pyrenees, we recommend the Hotel du Mont Rose in Gavarnie. This charming hotel offers stunning views of the mountains and is conveniently located near the Cirque de Gavarnie. Rooms start at around €100 per night, providing a comfortable retreat after a day of adventure. The hotel also features a restaurant that serves delicious local cuisine, allowing us to enjoy the flavors of the region without venturing far.
